Stockholm Arlanda Airport prioritises environmental issues and works with continuous improvements. In the past five years alone, the airport has invested more than SEK 200 M in various measures to improve the environment.
Buildings are heated almost exclusively with district heating from biofuels. They are cooled with water from Halmsjön, a nearby lake. The airport uses the environmentally friendliest anti-skid agent available in the market, and the water from aircraft de-icing and vehicle washing is purified.
At an early stage, Stockholm Arlanda introduced environmentally based take-off charges for aircraft. Airlines thus save money by using clean, quiet aircraft that are better for the environment.
Relations with the airport’s neighbours are important. Swedavia − the Swedish State enterprise that operates the airport − is working to ensure that as few people as possible will be disturbed by aircraft noise. It is currently testing an alternative method for aircraft approaching the airport, a “green approach” system. Letting aircraft descend continuously − instead of in steps − saves fuel and reduces atmospheric emissions.
