Construction begins on major new hotel at Stockholm-Arlanda

[2010-08-24 13:51]

The first foundation stone was laid in a ceremony today for the new Clarion Hotel Arlanda Airport. It is the kickoff for the 414-room hotel, which is being built adjoining Sky City and is expected to be completed in November 2012. The level of ambition is high – to be the best airport hotel in Europe.

At 11 a.m. this morning, Kerstin Lindberg Göransson (Airport Director of Stockholm-Arlanda Airport), Petter Stordalen (owner and Chairman of Choice Hotels Scandinavia) and Tomas Carlsson (President of NCC Construction Sverige AB) laid the ceremonial foundation stone for the hotel, which will become the hub of the new development region, Stockholm Airport City. The foundation stone contained newspapers and objects that are typical of the era and has now been set in the base of the hotel building.

“It will be a hotel for all of Sweden because Stockholm-Arlanda is the junction for both national and international air traffic,” says Kerstin Lindberg Göransson, Airport Director of  Stockholm-Arlanda. “The hotel is part of our strong ambition to be the largest hub in Sweden and one of Europe’s leading airports. For our travellers, it is a question of logistics but also of what is good for the environment.

“There has long been a need for more hotel rooms here at Stockholm-Arlanda and for a better-quality hotel. Because the ambition is high, Clarion was chosen to be the operator, given their clear ambitions to develop and create something more than just a hotel.”

Clarion has always had the goal as a hotel chain to create lively meeting places where people can share knowledge, ideas and cultural experiences – where art, music and design interact to provide guests with more than just a place to stay.

“This is not just the foundation stone for one of Europe’s best airport hotels. It is also one of the cornerstones in Choice’s Swedish venture. It will be both a national landmark and a flagship for Choice. We look forward to providing a unique hotel experience to 20 million travellers at Stocholm-Arlanda,” says Petter A. Stordalen, owner and Chairman of Choice Hotels Scandinavia, which is behind the Clarion chain of hotels.

The strategically important Clarion Hotel Arlanda is only one of three new additions to the hotel chain this year. The two other hotels are the new meeting venue in Gothenburg, Clarion Hotel Post, and the conference hotel in Malmö.

“Clarion Hotel Arlanda advances our pieces on the game board and further enhances our position in Sweden,” says Mr Stordalen.

Construction of the hotel is being carried out as a partnering project between Stockholm-Arlanda Airport, Choice Hotels Scandinavia and general contractor NCC Construction Sverige AB. The architect is Aros Arkitekter AB. The interior designer is Bjorken Architects.
