Stockholm Arlanda informally opens new portion of Terminal 5

Stockholm Arlanda Airport is building for the future and is now informally opening the new portion of Terminal 5, giving passengers a broader and faster terminal.

A Make Up Store, Mackmyra Whisky and the world’s first “snusidor” are among the novel features of Sweden’s largest duty- and tax-free shop, which will form the centre point of the new Terminal 5.

The departure hall in Terminal 5 is widening, with check-in counters on one side, check-in machines on the other and security checkpoints at one end. The departure hall will be easier for passengers to navigate, without the risk of queues crossing each other. The security checkpoint will be open on two levels with a total of eleven lanes, making the passenger’s path to the aircraft faster. Right after passing through the security checkpoint, passengers arrive at Sweden’s largest duty- and tax-free shop, which begins with an orientation zone.

“It will be easier for passengers to find, and faster to reach shopping, restaurants and aircraft,” says Jan Lindqvist, Head of Corporate Communication at Stockholm Arlanda.

The 1,700 square metre shop − larger than six tennis courts − with its eight metre high ceilings accommodates a rich array of products adapted to all tastes.

“Passengers are demanding better shopping. The new tax-free shop is one element of our effort to make time spent at the airport pleasant and inspiring. The journey begins well before you board your aircraft, and our ambition is to offer and exciting experience starting at Stockholm Arlanda,” says Anne-Marie Zuidweg, who is responsible for the shops and restaurants at Stockholm Arlanda Airport.

In addition to the traditional duty- and tax-free product range, the shop has chosen to stock a number of new brands. Stockholm Arlanda will be the first airport in the world that can offer two Swedish-based brands: Make Up Store and Mackmyra Whisky. Molton Brown and l’Occitane beauty products are other new brands. The shop also features the world’s first “snusidor” (for displaying snus, a traditional Swedish smokeless tobacco), staffed by a tobacco expert, as well as a chocolate counter with elegant chocolates sold by weight, staffed by a genuine chocolatier.

The new portion of Terminal 5 is opening informally on December 15, and the new terminal facilities will be fully completed in April 2009.
